An event exploring the open source circular economy!
Good design is open! The OSCEdays London event will take place from the 12th to 14th of June. We’ll be working together on design challenges to bring open source thinking to the circular economy!
The results will be openly shared and supported with insight from our challenge setters and the KTN, exploring the next steps to be taken further for the common good! By the end of the weekend you will have been part of solving these challenges through sustainable design, fixing bugs, prototyping solutions and building useful, customisable software, hardware, tools and culture to build a truly sustainable future that works without waste, in symbiosis with our environment and resources.

Join us alongside The Great Recovery, Open Energy Monitor, The Rubbish Diet, The People’s Design Lab, Cleanweb UK and more, to participate in a grassroots global event using open source principles to build a circular economy! Our challenges have been set by leading thinkers in the field! Others are still to be confirmed and there is also the opportunity to plugin and contribute to challenges around the world.

How can we support the worldwide local maker movement and places to build sustainable practices and ‘circular thinking’ into its approaches, projects and spaces? Around the world there has been a growth in practical Fab Labs, maker spaces and local design and manufacturing capabilities. This is encouraging for the circular economy community, as it raises understanding and awareness around how things are made and where they come from and fosters greater consideration of the impact of resource use. There is opportunity to further enhance this with aligning the way and place of working, alongside building in greater consideration of the future effects of this area; including 3D printing, wearable tech, IoT. We need an empowered public, awakened and educated to make pro-environmental choices, who can purchase circular designs through proper information on purchasing, product/ system choices, life extension routines and disposal. Let’s share what works and create new ways of increasing people’s trust and engagement in the circular economy. Currently the general public often have little faith, understanding or connectedness with the important (and powerful role) they play in our waste and resource system as the “consumer”. They do not see themselves as a key link and influencer in our supply chain and product based economy nor understand the power they have through their everyday purchases and actions, like recycling. The public can find it difficult and overwhelming to consider what’s behind the product in their hands: the resources, supply chains, environmental considerations and final disposal routes. A key consideration in the sustainability of technology is the energy that it takes to manufacture it. The energy required to make the stuff we consume makes up a significant part of our total energy consumption, perhaps as much as driving or heating our homes. Open hardware presents an opportunity for exploring the lifecycle and embodied energy impacts of products as many of the items of the product design are open such as the component list, circuit and enclosure designs. How can we encourage, raise awareness or create approaches to “wearable tech” design and connected “things” that take environmental and social considerations into account, with strategies that consider open source approaches and embed circular economy thinking during the design and complete product or service life cycle. Designing for life!
We have seen an explosion and buzz around wearable tech, smart devices connected by the internet of things, with promises of new and better ways to monitor, connect and interact with your environment and world around you. These social and environmental benefits could come at a cost to the circular economy, with possibilities of short life-spans, products that quickly become obsolete, users quickly losing interest in devices, increased use of composite materials, such as a t-shirts or even tables being embedded with electronics and sensors.
